Y’know All That VR360 Video? Someone Has to Edit It!

NAB 2016 is right around the corner. I, for one, am looking forward to it. There will be a lot to see, a lot to talk about. And there’s one topic that just about everyone is talking about – VR and 360 Video.

I’m excited to see some of the new rigs – people are already doing amazing things with GoPros, Blackmagic Design cameras (check out this sick rig. Those are my friends, The Diamond Brothers – they’re pretty amazing too, check them out here) and even mobile phones. And there is sure to be tons of 360 content to experience in myriad booths on the show floor. But there’s one topic that’s kind of important – well, critical – to all this 360 and VR content.

Someone has to edit it. So you’re going to need some solid post productions tools to do that. And there’s one guy who’s talking about it – a guy with a pretty impressive background in stereoscopic 3D cinema and now VR and 360 cinema. Of course I’m talking about Tim Dashwood of Dashwood Cinema Solutions.

Tim will be at NAB this year in the Virtual Reality Pavilion showing off his newest VR360 post production tools. They are nothing short of amazing. I’ve pasted the press release below, so you can see all the details. But if you want to see these tools in action, you have to come to his booth #N7922 in the North Hall in the LVCC.

Press Release:

FxFactory and Dashwood Cinema Solutions Will Debut New

Cinematic 360VR Post Production Tools at NAB 2016

New 360VR Toolbox and 360VR Express Plugin Suites for Adobe Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC, Apple Motion 5 and FCPX

Boston, MA (March 16, 2016)FxFactory (www.fxfactory.com) and Dashwood Cinema Solutions (www.dashwood3d.com), creators of award-winning Mac OS X apps and post production plugins, today announced they have partnered to debut updated and new 360-degree virtual reality post-production software at the 2016 NAB Show in Las Vegas next month.

In booth N7922 in the LVCC’s  Virtual Reality Pavilion, stereoscopic and cinematic 360 filmmaking expert Tim Dashwood will demonstrate the newest tools available in his 360VR Toolbox plugin suite for 360 video post production workflows, including a brand new stereoscopic 3D 360° slit-scan rendering plugin, stereoscopic 180° fisheye support, and a brand new consumer-focused plugin suite for the budget-minded cinematic 360° “virtual reality” (360VR) video producer.

“360° video, and the immersive virtual reality experience, is clearly the hottest topic at NAB 2016; everyone is talking about it,” said Tim Dashwood, founder of Dashwood Cinema Solutions. “However, while everyone seems excited about capturing 360 video with all of the amazing new 360 cameras, no one is talking about the critical steps between the capture and distribution of 360 video. The tremendous volume of 360 video being created needs to be edited, finessed, and delivered in a way that creates seamless, realistic, immersive stereoscopic 3D 360 experiences – and that’s an incredibly complex undertaking. At NAB 2016 we are simplifying that process by updating 360VR Toolbox, the industry’s most effective, flexible, and easily integrated stereoscopic 360 video post production plugin suite. At the same time we are making versions of our professional tools tailored to budget-conscious content creators in our new product, 360VR Express.”

360VR Toolbox New Features

360VR Toolbox previewed at NAB 2015 as the industry’s first software solution capable of monitoring the live 360° video output of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Motion and Final Cut Pro in real-time with the Oculus Rift DK2 head-mounted display (HMD). Through a successful beta test period, with evaluation and feedback from industry-leading 360VR production companies, Dashwood has added many new plugins to the suite that are essential in the post-production workflow of professional stereoscopic 360VR video. These include plugins for 360° XYZ-axis re-orientation, projection of 2D logos or video on 360VR, pan and scan output of “flat” video from 360VR sources, output of stereographic “little planet” or cubic “skyboxes” from 360VR sources, and spherical blur, sharpen, glow and noise reduction filters.

New to the suite at NAB 2016 are plugins that can convert stereoscopic 180° fisheye video sources to stereo 360VR equirectangular “lat-long” projection, or stereoscopically project still images or video sources into a spherical 3D 360° slit-scan rendering environment, a first for the 360° video plugin industry.

Dashwood will also be demonstrating some new enhancements currently in development for 360VR Toolbox, including a stereoscopic 360° particle emitter and a virtual editing environment within a head-mounted display.

New at NAB 2016: 360VR Express

360VR Express is a feature-limited version of the 360VR Toolbox plugin suite designed specifically for processing video or images from consumer-friendly 360VR cameras like the Kodak SP360 or Ricoh Theta S. This plugin suite will include support for monoscopic 180° or 360° video sources, as well as access to the basic functions of the 360VR HMD Viewer for real-time desktop or Oculus Rift DK2 previews from Premiere Pro, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. Features will include 360° XYZ-axis re-orientation, projection of 2D logos or video on 360VR, fisheye to spherical conversion, seamless 360 noise-reduction, and more.

Pricing and Availability

The 360VR Toolbox public beta is available now on the FxFactory plugin store for Mac OS X as a free trial and retails for $1,199.00 USD. It will be officially released in April 2016.

360VR Express will also be available for Mac OS X in April as a free trial and will retail for $119.00 USD.
